As an actor I keep taking classes, and learning from every opportunity I have. I want to learn, and ultimately I want to become a great actor. As I also say it, I do it with PASSION, WITH COMPASSION, WITH HUMOR AND STYLE. I have learned within my few experiences being an extra, or as they (movie producers) call us "background" that the days during the making of a movie could go for 10, 12 hours. Long days of work, and doing some sort of acting.
Well, last Friday I got a phone call to be an. extra or "background" as a patient in a movie that's being shot here in the Boston area. After finding a few details, including how much money I was going to get paid, I said sure, yes, I am available. I reported myself the next day right on time, 1 pm and ready to do my duties as an extra. Well, 11 hours passed, and I had not done ONE thing. ZERO. NADA. I know it could be a long day, but give something to do within those 11 hours. Make me walk 200 times within the same area, but give me something to do.
By midnight, and after "talking" to God, higher power, Buddha, angels and demons, I decided to leave. I communicated to the person in charge of the "background" people that I was not feeling good, and I needed to go. I was really not feeling good, because I felt disrespected, abused, and many other things, but ultimately, I asked myself: what is it going to make you happy Juan Carlos? $ 200.00 , being an extra in a movie, or simply, going back home, and enjoy the rest of the night with your partner, and celebrate your birthday weekend.
20 minutes later I was taking a hot shower in my home, getting ready to have a glass of wine, and talking to some friends on Facebook. I want to be an actor, and a great actor, because it is what I love, and my passion, BUT, you know what? I want to be a HAPPY MAN more than anything else. Certainly, being an extra or "background" in a movie WAS NOT GOING TO MAKE ME BE A HAPPY MAN.
I learned things, and I'm glad I learned them in a bit of a hard way.
P.S.: My apologies if I did make so many mistakes writing in English, remember, it is my second language.
