What does Broadway mean?

I’m going to start saying and writing that since English is not my first language I must apologize for my mistakes when I’m expressing myself using this tongue.

Broadway is for many actors the reason we are educating and training ourselves. The reason why we keep doing theatre, to reach one of the many venues located in New York City. I’m an actor, a Latino actor, who is trying very hard to beat the odds and make it not only into Broadway, but the entertainment industry, simply because it is a passion to be performing and transform myself into characters created by the imagination and writing of other artists.

However, my most recent acting experience has given the BEST of all of them. I live in Boston, but I was doing the show “12 Angry Men” at the Curtain Call Theatre in Braintree, MA. A community theatre, but a place where, in my opinion, I worked with very high talent. Cast and crew showed what they are capable of, and I couldn’t but to do MY BEST, and I think I did, because we had 6 sold out shows (we only planned 6 shows), and great reviews and feedback or feedforward, from critics, but especially from friends.

I’m the kind of person who does not pay attention 100% of the time to what critics say. On the other hand, lately, I constantly look for what “regular” human beings tell, write, or say about shows, electronics, books, etc. They have become the voice of a mass that may not be experts, but they talk from their heart (most of the time, I think) and mean what they say. Jim Dorman from the Patriot Ledger newspaper, however, wrote a review about the “12 Angry Men” show that was more human that any other review I have read before, and what I mean is that his note was clear, precise, and using a simple, plain English, but full of soul and heart. Especially, since he had the experience of being a juror in his life 3 years ago. Thanks Jim Dorman!!!

Finally, I keep learning that life is a matter of choices. Some of us are looking to make it into Broadway someday, but others have decided to stay local, have families, kids, do community theatre in Braintree, MA, and still shine as an actor. In my opinion, I worked with amazing performers, so professionals, disciplined, committed and talented that I was blessed with this opportunity, made me a better actor and person, but also makes me ask the question: What does Broadway mean? I chose to work in Braintree for the past couple of months, and what I great choice I made.
